Stillborn baby sparks protest in Bhadrak over alleged medical negligence by diagnostic centre

Bhubaneswar, May 27: A tense situation unfolded in Bhadrak district as a grieving family and irate locals staged a roadblock and burned tires in protest against a private diagnostic centre, accusing it of medical negligence that allegedly led to the death of a six-month-old foetus.
According to sources, Basanti Raut from Radhanga village under Dolasahi panchayat underwent an ultrasound at a private diagnostic centre on May 25. The report allegedly confirmed the foetus was healthy. Based on this report, Basanti consulted a gynaecologist at a private nursing home, who reviewed the scan and discharged her without raising concerns.
However, the following day, Basanti experienced sudden labour pain and her condition rapidly deteriorated. She was taken to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), where doctors were shocked to discover that the baby had already died in the womb four days earlier and showed signs of mummification.
Enraged by the discrepancy in medical assessments, the family held a dharna on the Bhadrak-Chandbali bypass road with the body of the stillborn baby, demanding strict action against the diagnostic centre. Basanti remains in critical condition at the DHH.
