Low-pressure system brewing near Bay of Bengal to impact Odisha weather

Bhubaneswar, May 26: A low-pressure area is expected to develop over the west-central and adjoining North Bay of Bengal around May 27, bringing notable weather changes across Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports an upper air trough extending from Marathwada to north coastal Andhra Pradesh, currently influencing weather conditions in southern Odisha.
In light of these developments, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for multiple districts, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface wind speeds of 30–40 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.
Districts under the thunderstorm alert include Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, and Malkangiri.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in some regions along with thunderstorms. Affected districts include Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Keonjhargarh, and Kandhamal.
The wet weather is forecast to persist until May 31. Authorities are advising residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid traveling to flood-prone areas, keep emergency kits ready, and stay updated on the latest weather advisories to ensure safety.
