Commissionerate Police crack down on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, May 19: In a significant move to bolster internal security, the Commissionerate Police have launched a major crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in Bhubaneswar. The initiative, spearheaded by DCP Jagmohan Meena, directs all police stations in the capital city to identify undocumented foreign nationals—particularly Bangladeshis—and take appropriate legal action.
During a recent crime control review meeting held at Bharatpur Police Station, DCP Meena emphasized the importance of verifying how these individuals entered the city, their current activities, and whether they possess valid documentation. Those found without proper papers will face immediate arrest and could either be deported or handed over to the Bangladesh Embassy.
The crackdown follows growing concerns over the suspected involvement of illegal immigrants in criminal activities. Police sources revealed that past cases have linked undocumented Bangladeshi nationals to thefts and other offenses. Just last week, ten Bangladeshis, including a middleman, were arrested near Bhubaneswar Railway Station.
To address the issue effectively, police are also monitoring social media activities of suspected individuals and have been instructed to maintain close surveillance on jail-returned criminals. Unofficial estimates suggest thousands may be residing illegally in Khurda, Cuttack, and Puri districts.
