Bhubaneswar, May 17: In a disturbing incident, the body of an unidentified person was found floating in an open drain near the Puri Railway Station under Kumbharpada police limits on Saturday morning. Locals discovered the body and immediately alerted the police.
A team from the Kumbharpada police station promptly reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem. The Circle Inspector also visited the scene and initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the cause of death.
Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased may have consumed excessive alcohol from a nearby liquor shop and accidentally fallen into the drain. However, police have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased, and further investigation is underway.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents about the danger posed by uncovered drains in Puri, especially with the Rath Yatra festival just days away. Despite repeated assurances by the civic authorities to cover open drains, many remain exposed, endangering lives. Locals have urged the administration to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies and ensure public safety during the upcoming festival.
