Southwest monsoon arrives in Andaman Sea, signals onset of rainy season

Bhubaneswar, May 13: The southwest monsoon has officially made its onset over the Andaman Sea and parts of the Nicobar Islands, marking the beginning of the much-awaited rainy season that plays a vital role in India’s agricultural cycle. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the development on Monday.
IMD scientist Umashankar Das shared the update on social media, stating, “Monsoon sets foot in the Andaman Sea. Southwest Monsoon winds have advanced into some areas of the South Bay of Bengal, the South Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands, and the North Andaman Sea today.”
This early advancement sets the stage for the gradual progress of the monsoon over the coming days. According to the IMD forecast, the monsoon is likely to cover more regions, including the southern Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the entire Andaman Sea, and parts of the central Bay of Bengal within the next four to five days.
Historically, the southwest monsoon reaches the Andaman Sea around May 18–19, followed by Kerala by June 1. Odisha typically experiences monsoon rains about 10–12 days after Kerala.
