Odisha Govt warns strict action against schools violating heatwave closure orders

Bhubaneswar, May 8: Amid the ongoing severe heatwave in Odisha, the School and Mass Education Department has issued strict instructions to all District Education Officers (DEOs) to take immediate action against schools that have failed to comply with the government’s closure directive.
In a letter issued by Additional Secretary Durga Prasad Mohapatra, the department emphasized that the state government had announced the closure of all government, aided, and private schools across Odisha from April 22, 2025. The decision was taken to protect students from the extreme summer temperatures, which pose a serious health risk.
However, the department has received reports that some schools continue to operate, disregarding the official order. The letter warned that such violations are unacceptable and put the lives of students at risk.
“You are directed to take immediate steps to ensure strict compliance with the closure directive in your district,” the letter stated.
The department has also instructed DEOs to intensify monitoring and conduct surprise checks to ensure no school remains open during the summer vacation period. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against violators to uphold student safety.
