Odisha making steady progress in addressing migrant workers’ issues: Deputy CM Singh Deo

Bhubaneswar, May 1: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Thursday highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to tackle the issues faced by migrant workers, stating that notable improvements have been achieved in recent months.
Addressing the media, Singh Deo said the government has taken several concrete measures to streamline the management and welfare of migrant labourers. “This year, we’ve seen significant progress. District Collectors and police officials have been directed to act swiftly on any complaints concerning migrant workers,” he noted.
He added that wherever necessary, the government is arranging for the safe return of stranded workers to Odisha. However, Singh Deo acknowledged that challenges persist, especially when workers migrate without proper registration under licensed contractors.
“We run into difficulties when workers leave the state through unauthorised agents. In fact, two individuals involved in illegal labour migration have already been dismissed from government service,” he said.
Emphasizing the state’s commitment, he assured that the government is actively working to curb illegal migration and safeguard workers’ rights.
