IMD issues orange and yellow alerts for thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall in Odisha on April 30

Bhubaneswar, April 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow warnings for several districts in Odisha ahead of severe weather conditions expected on April 30. The forecast includes thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall, likely during afternoon or evening hours.
According to IMD’s midday bulletin, a trough in the westerlies—located along Longitude 84°E and north of Latitude 15°N at an altitude of 5.8 to 9.6 km—remains active and is influencing the regional weather pattern.
An orange warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Kendrapara, where the most intense weather activity is anticipated.
A yellow warning is in place for Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, and Dhenkanal, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (40–50 km/h), and heavy rainfall. Other districts such as Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, and many interior and western Odisha districts may also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds, although without heavy rainfall.
Thunderstorm activity is expected to persist in parts of Odisha until May 3, the IMD added. No significant change in maximum daytime temperatures is expected over the next four days. However, a rise of 2–4°C is likely thereafter across most districts.
