Bhubaneswar, April 24: In a dramatic early morning encounter on Thursday, Debashish Behera, alias Handa, a notorious criminal infamously known as the ‘King of Forest’, sustained bullet injuries during a police operation in the Mangalpur forest area of Dhenkanal district.

According to police sources, Handa had been under surveillance after being spotted in the Kankadpala region. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team from Dhenkanal Sadar Police Station launched a search operation and managed to corner him inside the dense Mangalpur forest. As the police approached, Handa reportedly opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. During the brief but intense exchange of gunfire, Handa was shot in the leg.

Following the encounter, Handa was immediately rushed to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.

Handa is allegedly involved in several cases of robbery, illegal arms trade, and forest crimes. The successful operation marks a major breakthrough for local law enforcement in their efforts to curb criminal activity in forested areas of the district.
