Odisha braces for thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms from April 16 amid IMD alerts

Bhubaneswar, April 15: Odisha is set to experience a spell of intense weather activity starting April 16, as a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere triggers thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, hailstorms, and widespread rain across many districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple warnings, urging both residents and authorities to stay alert. As per the midday bulletin, the cyclonic system extends from northeast Madhya Pradesh to south coastal Odisha at an altitude of 1.5 km above mean sea level and is likely to intensify the weather conditions in the state from April 16 to 22.
On April 16, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected in the afternoon and evening across districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. Isolated rainfall is also likely in Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, and Sonepur.
An Orange Warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h, and hailstorm activity in parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Angul, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Koraput.
The active weather is expected to continue on April 17, with light to moderate rain in coastal and interior regions including Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. A Yellow Warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40–50 km/h in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Balasore.
