Overnight stay banned at Deomali Hilltop to protect ecology and ensure tourist safety
Bhubaneswar, April 12: The Koraput district administration has imposed a strict ban on overnight stays at Deomali Hilltop, Odisha’s highest peak, in a bid to safeguard its fragile ecosystem and enhance visitor safety. The directive, issued by Koraput District Magistrate and Collector V. Keerthi Vasan, prohibits tourists from remaining at the hilltop between 8 PM and 5 AM.
The order, which comes into immediate effect, has been enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. As per the notification, no individual or group will be allowed to camp or stay overnight at Deomali without explicit prior permission from the district authorities.
In addition, the administration has emphasized eco-conscious behavior among tourists. Carrying single-use plastic to Deomali is strictly banned, with violators subject to penalties under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Tourists must use designated waste bins, and proper disposal practices are mandatory.
Local tour operators and vendors have also been tasked with maintaining hygiene and supporting environmental conservation efforts. Tourists must comply with instructions from the Pottangi Block Administration and local authorities, failing which legal action may be initiated under the relevant environmental and civic safety laws.
