Notorious criminal injured in police encounter in Angul

Bhubaneswar, April 6: A wanted criminal, Khirod Nayak, sustained bullet injuries during a police encounter late Saturday night in Angul district. The incident took place near Hanuman Batika when police teams attempted to arrest him.

Khirod, a resident of Chendipada in Angul, was reportedly involved in multiple criminal cases, including robbery, extortion, and illegal possession of arms. Acting on a tip-off regarding his whereabouts, Chendipada Police, in coordination with Angul Town Police and the Special Squad, launched a joint operation to apprehend him.

According to reports, Khirod tried to evade arrest upon spotting the police and fled into a nearby mango orchard under the jurisdiction of Angul Town Police Station. In a desperate attempt to escape, he opened fire on the approaching officers, prompting the police to retaliate. During the exchange, he was shot in the right leg and was subsequently captured.

He was immediately shifted to the district headquarters hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.

Police have recovered a firearm from the spot. Further investigation is underway to uncover his involvement in other pending cases.
