Rath Yatra 2025: SJTA team surveys Bargarh’s Padmapur forest for chariot wood

Bhubaneswar, March 25: In preparation for the upcoming Rath Yatra, a five-member team from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has arrived in Bargarh to inspect the Padmapur forest for high-quality wood required for constructing the sacred chariots.
The team, along with the Bargarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), will select trees that meet traditional specifications. This year, 814 wooden logs are needed for the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.
Among the required logs, 72 pieces of Phasi wood—specifically used for crafting chariot wheels—are expected to be sourced from Padmapur. Sudarshan Mekap, a member of the temple’s wood inspection team, emphasized the importance of Phasi wood due to its durability and flexibility.
SJTA has formally requested the Bargarh DFO for necessary permissions and logistical support. Once the survey is complete, the wood will be felled and transported under strict supervision, ensuring adherence to religious and environmental guidelines.
The Rath Yatra, one of India’s most revered festivals, attracts lakhs of devotees who pull the massive chariots through Puri’s streets, celebrating the divine journey of Lord Jagannath and His siblings.
