Odisha Assembly adjourned amid uproar over women’s safety and medical education

Bhubaneswar, March 24: The Odisha Assembly was adjourned till 12:09 PM today following chaotic scenes as opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislators staged protests over women’s safety and medical education.
The agitated members stormed the Speaker’s podium, waving placards and raising slogans, disrupting the proceedings and forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House temporarily.
The BJD demanded 27% reservation for SC, ST, and OBC students in medical education, arguing that marginalized communities must be given fair opportunities in the field of medicine. Meanwhile, Congress members protested against the government's handling of women’s safety, criticizing the administration for its alleged failure to protect women and ensure justice in recent incidents.
The Assembly descended into a noisy commotion, with Congress legislators beating gongs, ringing bells, and shouting slogans to highlight their grievances. As tensions escalated, the Speaker had no choice but to suspend proceedings. The session is expected to resume later, with discussions likely to continue on these pressing issues.
