Passengers escape unharmed as NJP-Chennai Express derails near Balasore

Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: Passengers aboard the NJP-Chennai Express (New Jalpaiguri-Chennai Central Express) had a narrow escape when the train derailed near Sabira railway station in Balasore district on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Soro police station, but no casualties or injuries were reported.
The train, traveling at high speed, experienced a mechanical fault, leading to the detachment of its battery and other mechanical components. According to railway sources, the New Jalpaiguri Express (Train No. 22612) had departed from New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and was en route to Chennai Central when the derailment took place near Belsabira, just meters away from Sabira railway station, around 3:15 PM.
Following the incident, batteries and mechanical equipment fell from the train, but passengers remained unharmed. Railway authorities immediately halted operations on the affected track and initiated repair work, causing significant delays in train movement along the route.
Efforts are currently underway to restore normal rail services, and railway officials are investigating the exact cause of the mechanical failure that led to the derailment.
