Odisha govt orders strict action against cow slaughter, expands welfare initiatives

Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: The Odisha government has issued strict directives to district collectors, SPs, and local administrations to take immediate action against cow slaughter. Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy and warned that authorities would act swiftly against any violations.
Mallik made this statement during his visit to the Govardhan Peeth Goshala in Puri, where he expressed satisfaction with its management. He also announced plans to establish a dedicated OMFED depot to supply subsidized ghee to Srimandir.
To promote cattle welfare, the government has invited NGOs and social workers to construct cowsheds, ensuring the availability of food and materials. Under the Kamadhenu scheme, over 30,000 applications have been received via the Go Sugam portal, supporting cattle farmers with subsidies of up to ₹52 lakh per cowshed and ₹2,000 per cow. The scheme also funds grass cultivation.
A ₹9 crore budget has been allocated to construct 200 cow sheds, with additional infrastructure being developed under the Mukhyamantri Prani Kalyan Yojana, including filling vacant LI and VS posts, deploying MVU vehicles in every block, and launching the ‘1962’ helpline.
