Sambalpur woman dies despite sister-in-law’s life-saving liver donation

Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: A woman from Sambalpur, suffering from a life-threatening liver disease, has passed away despite undergoing a liver transplant, in which her elder sister-in-law donated a portion of her liver to save her life.
The deceased, Umakanti Pradhan, and her donor, Pratima Pradhan, were residents of Jankarpali village in the Jujumura block of Sambalpur district. Faced with a rapidly deteriorating condition, Umakanti underwent a liver transplant on January 24 at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad. Doctors initially confirmed the surgery as successful, offering hope to her family.
However, complications arose post-surgery as severe infections led to multiple organ failure. Despite 28 days of intensive treatment, her health continued to decline, and she tragically passed away while still under medical care.
Her grieving family members are now returning home to perform her last rites. The tragic incident underscores the risks associated with organ transplantation, despite medical advancements. It also highlights the selfless sacrifice of organ donors, like Pratima Pradhan, who risk their own well-being to save loved ones.
