IMD issues orange warning for thunderstorms, hailstorms in Odisha from Feb 19-22

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (40-50 km/h), and hailstorms in several parts of Odisha from February 19 to 22. The affected districts include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal. The current weather system is due to a trough extending from Jharkhand to South Odisha, the IMD reported.

February 20: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur. Orange warnings have been issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore, while a yellow warning is in place for Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, and Cuttack.
February 21: More thunderstorms are likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and other districts, with an orange warning issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore.
February 22: Thunderstorms may persist in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, while dry weather is expected elsewhere. A yellow warning remains in effect for these districts.
February 23-24: Light rain or thunderstorms may occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, and nearby areas, while other parts of Odisha will experience dry conditions.
The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, seek safe shelter from lightning, and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. Farmers are urged to use hail nets to protect crops from damage.
