Engineering student arrested in connection with alleged suicide of Nepali peer

Bhubaneswar, Feb 17: The Commissionerate Police arrested a student from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University on Monday in connection with the alleged suicide of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal.
The accused, identified as Advik Srivastava, is also a third-year Mechanical Engineering student at KIIT and was reportedly in a relationship with Prakriti. A police official confirmed, “The accused has been arrested and is currently being questioned. Our investigation continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding the girl's tragic death.”
Prakriti was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the evening of February 16 at the university’s hostel campus. She had been in a relationship with Advik for three years, but tensions arose after he received a job offer and relocated, leading to misunderstandings between them.
The incident has ignited protests among students, with many calling for justice for Prakriti. In response, the university’s Registrar’s office issued a controversial notice, instructing all Nepali students to vacate the campus. The notice stated, “The university is closed sine die for all international students from Nepal. They are hereby directed to leave the university campus immediately on February 17, 2025.” This has raised concerns regarding the treatment of students in the aftermath of the incident.
