Over 21,000 Anganwadi centres in Odisha lack buildings, 31,000 without electricity

Bhubaneswar, Feb 15: More than 21,000 Anganwadi centres in Odisha are operating without their own buildings, while over 31,000 lack electricity, as revealed by Women & Child Development Minister Pravati Parida in the State Assembly. The information was provided in response to a written question from BJD MLA Arvind Mohapatra.
According to the Minister, Odisha has a total of 74,192 Anganwadi centres, but many face severe infrastructure shortages. While 52,806 centres have their own buildings, 21,486 continue to function without one. Additionally, 42,736 centres have access to electricity, but over 31,000 remain unelectrified. The data also highlights that 26,455 centres have boundary walls, while a staggering 47,737 lack this basic security feature.
The state government has been allocating funds in phases to address these infrastructure gaps. For electricity, financial assistance is being provided to districts, along with a security deposit to facilitate connections from nearby supply sources. While there is no immediate plan to construct boundary walls, steps are being taken gradually to improve overall infrastructure, ensuring better facilities for children and mothers.
