Odisha Government seeks ₹12,59,148 crore from 16th Finance Commission

Bhubaneswar, Feb 6: The Odisha government has made a significant demand for funding from the 16th Finance Commission, requesting ₹12,59,148 crore for the period of 2026-2031. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced this ambitious financial proposal following a meeting with the Commission, during which he detailed the state's urgent financial needs.
The request includes a substantial allocation of ₹9,88,422 crore to address the pre-devolution revenue deficit, alongside ₹1,10,434 crore for specific state needs and ₹1,00,036 crore for grants to rural and urban local bodies. Additionally, the state is seeking ₹31,004 crore for the State Disaster Management Fund and ₹29,252 crore for the State Disaster Relief Fund.
The Chief Minister emphasized that these demands are grounded in the state’s developmental requirements and financial capacity. He also urged the Commission to increase Odisha's share of central taxes from the current 41% to 50% and enhance its share in the central government’s tax revenue from 4.528% to 4.964%.
The 16th Finance Commission, led by Dr. Arvind Panagariya, is currently visiting Odisha from February 4 to 7 to assess the state’s financial landscape. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, and other senior officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the discussions.
