First baby for chimpanzee Durga at Nandankanan Zoological Park

Bhubaneswar, Jan 30: Chimpanzee Durga gave birth to her first infant at Nandankanan Zoological Park on the late night of Wednesday, according to a statement from the zoo's Deputy Director, Sanatan Kumar Narayan.
Durga had mated with Julu, another chimpanzee at the zoo, approximately 218 days ago, making this her first experience as a mother. However, the news is bittersweet as Julu, the oldest chimpanzee at Nandankanan, passed away on December 30, 2024, due to age-related health issues.
The arrival of the infant has been a significant moment for the zoo, increasing the total number of chimpanzees at Nandankanan to eight. The zoo staff is closely monitoring both Durga and her newborn, ensuring they receive the proper care. This birth is also a part of ongoing efforts at the zoo to support the conservation and breeding of endangered species.
The zoo authorities have expressed hope that the newborn will thrive and contribute to the conservation efforts of the species in the future.
