Two elephant deaths in Odisha highlight concerns over wildlife safety

Bhubaneswar, Jan 25: In a tragic development, two elephants have died in separate incidents in Odisha, sparking renewed concern about wildlife protection in the state.
A young tusker, estimated to be 10-12 years old, was discovered dead near the Rangadaba office under the Athagarh forest range. Forest officials suspect the elephant died from electrocution after possibly coming into contact with live electric wires. An investigation is underway to confirm the exact cause of death.
In a separate incident, a severely injured elephant died in B Karuabahahal village under the Ujjalpur forest range in Sundargarh district. The elephant, which had visible deep cuts on its back and neck, was reportedly roaming the area for several days.
Villagers made attempts to care for the animal by offering paddy and cabbage, but despite their efforts, the elephant collapsed while moving toward the jungle after eating.
Preliminary reports suggest the elephant had traveled from Chhattisgarh and may have been injured in a fight with another elephant. The wounds, believed to be several days old, are thought to have led to its death.
Both incidents underline the pressing need for enhanced measures to safeguard wildlife and mitigate risks such as human-induced hazards and interspecies conflicts.
