Renowned freedom fighter Keshab Panigrahi passes away

Bhubaneswar, Jan 25: Renowned freedom fighter Keshab Panigrahi, a prominent figure from Balasore’s Nilagiri area, passed away at the age of 98. Born on April 6, 1927, Panigrahi’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to India’s independence struggle and his deep commitment to social justice.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals during his school years, Panigrahi joined the freedom movement at the young age of 17. His activism brought him into frequent conflict with British authorities, leading to multiple imprisonments and regular court appearances every eight days. In retaliation for his resistance, the British seized and sold his property for a meager sum of 145 rupees.
After India gained independence, Panigrahi was recognized as a freedom fighter by both the central and state governments. He received honors from prominent leaders, including the Chief Minister and the President of India, in acknowledgment of his contributions.
Even after independence, Panigrahi remained a vocal advocate for justice, often calling for a "second independence movement" to address ongoing social issues.
