Odisha records unusually warm January, fans replace blankets

Bhubaneswar, Jan 24: Odisha is experiencing unusually high temperatures this January, with the mercury soaring far above normal levels, disrupting the typical mild winter season. Residents are resorting to using fans and seeking shade to cope with the unseasonal heat.
Several areas in the state have recorded temperatures exceeding 32°C, an anomaly for this time of year. Parlakhemundi recorded the highest temperature at 34.2°C, followed by Sundargarh at 33.5°C, Koraput at 33.2°C, and both Jharsuguda and Bargarh at 33°C.
Koraput broke a 14-year-old record with temperatures reaching 32.6°C, surpassing the previous high recorded on January 30, 2009.
Uma Shankar Das, scientist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), explained that a high-pressure belt over Odisha is obstructing the flow of cooler northern air, leading to the temperature spike.
The heat wave is expected to persist until January 25, with most parts of the state likely to record temperatures above 30°C, keeping winter at bay.
