Unseasonal rains push farmer in Jagatsinghpur to end his life

Bhubaneswar, Dec 31: A farmer in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district allegedly ended his life on Monday, distressed over extensive crop damage caused by unseasonal rains last week. The incident occurred in Sarena village under Balikuda police limits, where the deceased, identified as Krutibas Swain, was a cultivator.
Reports state that Krutibas, accompanied by his brother, visited their agricultural field on Monday and was devastated to find their ready-to-harvest crops ruined by the recent unseasonal rains. Heartbroken, he returned home in the evening and locked himself in his room.
When Krutibas failed to join the family for dinner, his worried relatives called their neighbors and broke open the door, only to find him hanging from the ceiling. He was rushed to a nearby healthcare facility, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Family members allege Krutibas was overwhelmed by the crop loss and the financial burden it imposed. They have demanded compensation for his family, urging authorities to address farmers’ plight in the region.
