Farmer ends life in Kendrapara after crop loss due to unseasonal rains

Bhubaneswar, Dec 28: A 72-year-old farmer from Kendrapara district tragically ended his life on Saturday by consuming pesticide, reportedly after suffering severe crop loss caused by unseasonal rains.
The deceased, identified as Daitari Jena from Kosida village under Derabish police jurisdiction, had reportedly taken a loan to cultivate his land. However, recent heavy rainfall devastated his crops. On Friday, Jena visited his field to assess the damage and was deeply distressed by the destruction. Upon returning home, he consumed pesticide.
Family members rushed Jena to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The incident has plunged the family into grief and despair.
This marks the second such tragedy in Kendrapara district in recent days. Earlier, Gourahari Mallick, a 52-year-old farmer from Santhapur village in the Derabishi block, died of a cardiac arrest reportedly linked to the stress of crop loss. He, too, was rushed to the district headquarters hospital but could not be saved.
