Police investigate suspected honour killing in Berhampur

Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: In a tragic and shocking incident, the bodies of a married couple were discovered hanging from a tree near Alarigada village under Sadar police limits in Berhampur on Thursday morning. The deceased have been identified as Sumitra Sahu, wife of Santosh Sahu from Patapur village, and Rajendra Sahu, son of Simanchal Sahu from Radhadeipur village. Both villages fall under the jurisdiction of Patapura police station.
According to officials, the couple had been missing since December 19, prompting their families to file missing person reports at Patapur police station. Investigations revealed that despite being married to others and each having three children, the couple had developed a romantic relationship.
Police suspect possible involvement of the families, as honour killings are not uncommon in the region. However, they have yet to confirm whether this was a premeditated murder or a case of suicide. A detailed investigation has been launched, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
