Minister warns against egg hoarding amid price hike

Bhubaneswar, Dec 18: Odisha's Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister, Gokulananda Mallik, has issued a stern warning against hoarding and black marketing of eggs amid a recent price hike. Speaking to the media, Mallik acknowledged the price rise, attributing it to a temporary shortage caused by increased demand and disruptions in the supply chain.
The minister explained that a significant quantity of eggs from Odisha is typically supplied to West Bengal, which also imports from Andhra Pradesh. However, due to an outbreak of poultry disease in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal has reduced its imports from there and is now relying solely on Odisha for its supply.
This shift has created a shortage in Odisha, compounded by heightened winter demand for eggs.
To address the issue, the state government has initiated measures to boost daily egg production to 10 lakh. Support is being extended to poultry farmers to help achieve this target and stabilize prices in the local market.
