After potatoes, eggs join rising food costs list in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Dec 7: After witnessing a sharp increase in potato prices, consumers in Odisha are now facing another concern: the rising cost of eggs. Previously sold at ₹6 per piece, eggs are now retailing at ₹9 each, causing widespread panic among the populace.
Reports indicate that the state produces approximately 1.2 crore eggs daily, with wholesale prices set at ₹6.42. However, the retail surge has left many struggling to keep up with the rising food costs. In the past, eggs were primarily sourced from Andhra Pradesh, but now local farms in Khordha and Berhampur are supplying eggs to Bhubaneswar.
Data reveals that on non-vegetarian days, around 6.3 lakh eggs are consumed, while only 3.15 lakh are sold on vegetarian days. Although the selling price of eggs should align with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NACMF) guidelines, traders seem to be ignoring these regulations, leading to accusations of exploitation from consumers.
With rising costs of essential items like potatoes, onions, and cooking oil, the price hike in eggs adds to the growing list of concerns for households across Odisha.
