Food supplies dept raids markets in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar over potato price hike

Bhubaneswar, Dec 2: Officials from the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department conducted extensive raids in major markets of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar following allegations of exorbitant potato prices. The inspections targeted Bhubaneswar’s Market No. 4 and Cuttack’s Chhatra Bazaar, where potatoes were being sold at Rs 40-50 per kg, far exceeding the usual rates.
Officials issued strict warnings to shopkeepers against overpricing and directed them to display proper rate charts to ensure transparency. They emphasized that non-compliance would lead to stringent action, including penalties.
The raids were prompted by reports of panic buying and inflated prices in the retail market. However, supply officials reassured consumers that there is no shortage, as fresh consignments of potatoes have arrived. Five trucks unloaded in Cuttack, while 10-12 trucks reached Bhubaneswar’s Aiginia Market, stabilizing supply.
Wholesale prices for potatoes from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal were reported at Rs 3500-3800 per quintal. Supply official Rajalakshmi Patra attributed the price surge to panic buying, assuring residents that the situation would stabilize soon.
