Deep depression intensifies, cyclonic storm expected in 12 hours

Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has been moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 13 kmph and is currently centered approximately 130 km east-southeast of Trincomalee, 400 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 510 km southeast of Puducherry, and 590 km south-southeast of Chennai.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Wednesday that the system is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours. It is expected to move further north-northwestwards, approaching the Tamil Nadu coast while skirting the Sri Lanka coast over the next two days. If it develops into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Pengal.’
Though the cyclone will have no significant impact on Odisha, light to moderate rain is expected in several districts. On November 28, districts like Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Ganjam, and Gajapati may experience light rain. Rain is also forecast for Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Puri, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati on November 29.
