Odisha to construct cold storages in 58 sub-divisions to aid farmers

Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: The Odisha government is actively constructing cold storages across 58 sub-divisions to support farmers, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo informed the Assembly on Wednesday. The initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the value of agricultural produce, providing significant benefits to the farming community.
Singh Deo, who also oversees the Agriculture portfolio, highlighted the government’s efforts to modernize the agricultural infrastructure. “These cold storages will ensure better preservation of crops, helping farmers secure higher returns,” he said.
The Deputy CM further announced plans to establish additional cold storages on a need-based model through public-private partnerships (PPP). This approach aims to leverage private expertise and investment to improve storage capacity and accessibility.
Additionally, the state government plans to introduce hybrid cold storages to accommodate a wider range of agricultural products. This multi-pronged strategy underscores Odisha’s commitment to enhancing farmers' income and minimizing wastage in the agricultural supply chain.
