Speaker adjourns Odisha Assembly twice following opposition uproar

Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: The Winter Session of the Odisha Assembly began on a stormy note, with Speaker Surama Padhy adjourning the House twice on the first day due to disruptions by Opposition members protesting a death linked to the consumption of mango kernel gruel.
The first adjournment occurred after the obituary motion, with the Question Hour beginning briefly before being halted until 12:25 PM. Following a short resumption, the session was again interrupted, forcing Speaker Padhy to adjourn proceedings until 4:00 PM.
During the session, the Opposition, led by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, raised concerns over governance failures and demanded accountability. Congress leaders held Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi responsible for the mango kernel death, demanding his resignation. A heated debate ensued between the BJP and the Opposition, further escalating tensions.
Earlier, Chief Minister Majhi introduced an obituary motion to honor deceased former members of the Assembly, with condolences also expressed by the Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik and other leaders. Members observed a one-minute silence in tribute.
