Similipal Tiger Reserve to welcome another tigress from Maharashtra to boost population

Bhubaneswar, Nov 7: In a significant effort to boost the tiger population and prevent genetic inbreeding, Similipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha is set to receive another female tiger from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
A specialized 10-member team from Similipal has already departed for Tadoba to facilitate the tigress’s relocation, which is expected to be completed within the next week. The team will closely monitor the tigress’s movements and ensure all safety measures are in place throughout the transfer, according to official sources.
This initiative follows the successful reintroduction of another tigress, Jamuna, from Tadoba to Similipal on August 28. Since her arrival, Jamuna has adapted well to her new environment, displaying natural behaviors such as hunting and feeding in her enclosure.
Currently, Odisha hosts a total of 30 tigers, with 27 of them residing in Similipal, including 13 melanistic (black) tigers. The addition of the new tigress is part of broader conservation efforts to strengthen the tiger population and genetic diversity in the region.
