Odisha seeks input on replacing wood with cow dung cakes at Swargadwara

Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: The Odisha government is considering an eco-friendly initiative at the Swargadwara crematorium in Puri by promoting the use of cow dung cakes (ghasi) instead of wood for cremation, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokula Nanda Mallik announced on Tuesday.
The move aims to reduce pollution caused by wood burning while aligning with Hindu rituals. Discussions have already begun with the Swargadwara managing committee to explore the feasibility of the proposal, Mallik said, with plans expected to be finalised soon.
Additionally, the minister revealed that a committee, chaired by a Deputy Chief Minister and comprising five ministers and five secretaries, will be formed. This body will explore ways to utilize cow dung and cow urine, focusing on cow protection, expanding cattle shelters, and boosting dairy production.
