Crime branch to investigate suspicious death of alleged ganja smuggler in Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar, Oct 5: The Crime Branch is set to investigate the suspicious death of Jyestha Bandaki, an alleged ganja smuggler who was reportedly beaten to death by a police team in Kandhamal district. This incident has ignited controversy, prompting earlier disciplinary action against several police officials from the Gochhapada police station due to allegations of their involvement in Jyestha’s death.
Sources indicate that dissatisfaction among Jyestha's family and local residents regarding the initial police investigation led the Director General of Police (DGP) to mandate a Crime Branch inquiry. The investigation will be spearheaded by Crime Branch DSP Rajat Ray.
Previously, five police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector and a Havildar from the Gochhapada police station, faced disciplinary measures. Furthermore, three home guards were dismissed due to negligence.
Jyestha's body was discovered on September 26 near Danganamu Ghat, falling under the jurisdiction of the Gochapada police station. Family members and locals have alleged that Jyestha was brutally killed by police officers, who subsequently disposed of his body. Reports suggest that Jyestha and a friend were transporting contraband and liquor on their motorbike when they were intercepted by the Kandhamal police, leading to a high-speed chase that resulted in the police allegedly ramming their motorbike, seriously injuring both occupants.
