Surprise raid in Sambalpur Jail uncovers tobacco and drug smuggling operation

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: Sambalpur police conducted a surprise raid at Sambalpur Mandal Jail late Thursday night, uncovering a significant stash of tobacco products and drugs. The operation, led by Magistrate Swatchandan Behera, Additional SP Haresh Chandra Pandey, and Sadar SDPO, resulted in the seizure of multiple packets of gutkha, khaini, bhang (a cannabis product), alcohol, and cigarettes from various cells. During the raid, authorities discovered that tennis balls filled with tobacco and drugs were being thrown into the prison from outside.
Additional SP Pandey informed the media, “We entered the jail at around 3:15 am and inspected all 22 wards, including bathrooms and latrines. Our team seized a variety of items, including tobacco products, bidis, lighters, and narcotics.” Currently, there are 576 inmates housed across the 22 wards of Sambalpur Mandal Jail.
In a separate incident, police also raided Bargarh Jail around 5:00 am on Friday, recovering medicines, food items, and alcohol. These operations have raised concerns about how such a large quantity of contraband is making its way into the jails.
