Judicial probe launched into alleged police assault on Army officer

Bhubaneswar, Sept 30: The Commission of Inquiry, led by Justice (Retd) Chitta Ranjan Dash, a former judge of the Orissa and Calcutta High Courts, has commenced its investigation into the alleged assault of an Army officer and his fiancée at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar. The inquiry process began on Monday at the Special Circuit House office in Bhubaneswar, where the commission will now issue notifications and invite affidavits from the concerned parties.
Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania and other senior officials were present as the probe officially began. The Odisha government had earlier outlined the terms of reference for the Commission of Inquiry.
The judicial probe was ordered by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi following public outrage over the alleged custodial assault on the Army Captain and his fiancée. Justice Dash’s commission has been tasked with submitting its findings within 60 days.
Meanwhile, a parallel investigation by the Crime Branch into the incident is ongoing. The incident originally unfolded on September 15 when the Army officer and his fiancée approached Bharatpur police station to file a complaint about a road rage incident, during which they were allegedly harassed by local youths.
