Keonjhar opens gates to manage Baitarani River surge as flood alerts increase

Bhubaneswar, Sept 17: The Subarnarekha River is currently flowing above the danger mark, posing a significant risk of flooding to thousands of acres of farmland and several villages. The water level at Rajghat near Jaleswar has reached 10.20 meters and is anticipated to exceed the danger threshold of 10.36 meters.
Recent heavy rainfall has caused river levels across the state to surge, prompting the administration to remain on high alert. In a related incident, the Jamkunda sluice gate in Baliapal block, Balasore district, has been damaged by the downpour, disrupting the road link between Baliapal and Jamkunda, which is now submerged under ankle-deep water. Over 1,000 hectares of farmland have been flooded, resulting in substantial crop damage.
The Irrigation Department has begun emergency repairs, including the use of sandbags to temporarily fix the sluice gate. In Keonjhar district, 16 gates of the Anandapur barrage have been opened to manage excess water from the Baitarani River, which is currently flowing at 36.56 meters, just short of the danger level of 37.44 meters. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation, with officials prepared to address any emerging emergencies as water levels continue to rise.
