Minister reviews flood response as heavy rainfall hits all Odisha districts
Bhubaneswar, Sept 10: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari today held a review meeting to assess response efforts to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. The meeting was attended by Special Relief Commissioner Deoranjan Kumar Singh, Additional DG Sanjay Kumar, and other senior officials.
Following the review, the minister stated that all 30 districts of Odisha experienced heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Malkangiri recording the highest rainfall and Koraput also heavily affected. District Magistrates have been instructed to stay alert for any emergencies resulting from the downpour. In Malkangiri, six ODRF teams and five Fire Services teams have been deployed. While some roads were flooded, there have been no casualties. Eighty rescue boats are in operation, and helicopters are on standby for rescue efforts.
Over 2,000 people have been evacuated in Malkangiri and placed in relief shelters until the floodwaters recede. The state government is closely coordinating with district and block administrations, with the Chief Minister personally monitoring the situation. So far, the situation remains under control, although one person was injured in a landslide.
Meanwhile, the depression has moved west-northwest at a speed of 22 kmph and is currently located over northern Chhattisgarh and interior Odisha. It is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Tuesday evening as it moves across Chhattisgarh and into eastern Madhya Pradesh.
