Worker killed in fly ash accident at Modern Metals factory in Sundargarh

Bhubaneswar, Sept 5: A laborer was tragically killed after being covered in hot fly ash at the Modern Metals Factory in Chadrihariharpur, Odisha’s Sundargarh district, on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Bhagirath Hans (45) from Birmitrapur, succumbed to his injuries after the accident.
Reports indicate that Bhagirath was working on fly ash disposal in the factory’s DI plant when a heap of hot ash was accidentally dumped on him. Despite being rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) by fellow employees, Bhagirath, who suffered over 90% burn injuries, passed away during treatment.
Following the incident, Bhagirath’s wife, Saraswati Hans, lodged a complaint at the Birmitrapur police station, alleging that her husband's death resulted from inadequate protective gear at the workplace. The police have since registered a case in connection with the incident.
Raghunathpali MLA Durga Charan Tanti has voiced concerns about the factory’s safety conditions and announced plans to address worker safety issues in the Assembly. Himanshu Bal of the Modern Metals Workers Union and State Secretary of BMS also expressed concern, highlighting that frequent accidents at the factory are due to safety lapses.
