Tribal woman hacked to death in Keonjhar over sorcery allegations

Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: A tribal woman named Salke Hembram was allegedly hacked to death on Sunday night in Nialijharan village, located under Ghashipura police limits in Odisha's Keonjhar district, over suspicions of practicing sorcery.
The incident occurred while Salke was at home with her mother-in-law, Sumi. The rest of the family had gone out to attend a community feast. An unidentified individual reportedly entered their home, dragged Salke outside, and brutally killed her.
Despite the severity of the crime, none of the family members, including Salke’s husband, reported the incident to the police. It was Salke's brother, Ghanashyam, who traveled from Khadupada village to inform the Ghashipura police about the incident.
Upon receiving the information, the police, led by Anandapur SDPO, immediately launched an investigation. A scientific team also arrived at the scene to gather evidence. The villagers' silence has led to suspicions that Salke was murdered due to allegations of practicing sorcery.
