Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoo acquires two giraffes

Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: Odisha's Nandankanan Zoological Park recently welcomed a pair of young giraffes—a male and a female—from the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata as part of an animal exchange program. The male giraffe is 1 year and 5 months old, while the female is 1 year and 1 month old. With their arrival, the giraffe population at Nandankanan has increased to three.
Transporting the giraffes by road was a challenging task, requiring meticulous planning. The zoo authorities conducted a thorough survey of the route, identifying potential hazards along the way. A detailed transportation plan was then developed in collaboration with district officials, including Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) to ensure the animals' safety.
The journey from Kolkata began on the night of August 31, with the team and giraffes reaching Nandankanan after a 25-hour journey. Upon arrival, the giraffes were placed in a specially prepared quarantine space to acclimate to their new environment.
