Elephant found dead in Khurda district, suspected electrocution

Bhubaneswar, Aug 30: An elephant was discovered dead at Damanbhuin Bhandarijhar under the Tangi range in Khurda district on Friday. While the precise cause of death remains unclear, electrocution is suspected to be the likely reason.
This incident represents the second elephant death in the area in the past two months, highlighting concerns about the declining elephant population in Odisha. Previously, a 9-month-old elephant calf died in the Athagarh forest range of Cuttack district due to septicaemia. In June, a baby elephant, estimated to be around five to six years old, was found dead in the Sorishapal Reserve Forest under the Athagarh division.
The Forest Department has initiated an investigation into the latest incident. The recurring fatalities have sparked growing alarm about the threats facing the state’s elephant population and the need for effective conservation measures.
