Nine sentenced to life imprisonment in Mahanga double murder case

Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: In a significant verdict, the Salipur Additional District and Sessions Court in Cuttack sentenced nine individuals to life imprisonment on Wednesday in connection with the widely reported Mahanga double murder case.
The court, however, acquitted one of the accused due to insufficient evidence related to the brutal murders of BJP leader Kulamani Baral and his associate Dibyasingh Baral on January 2, 2021.
Sources reveal that on that tragic day, senior BJP leader Kulamani Baral and his relative Dibyasingh Baral (82) were viciously attacked and killed, stemming from a dispute over a housing scheme. A case was subsequently filed at the Mahanga police station, naming 13 individuals as accused.
Police apprehended 10 of the suspects and brought them to trial, while the main accused, Prafulla Biswal, remained on the run. However, Biswal died under suspicious circumstances in a truck accident in February of the previous year.
