Odisha Assembly Speaker convenes all-party meeting amid reservation protests

Bhubaneswar, Aug 27: Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy has convened an all-party meeting following disruptions in the House caused by opposition BJD, Congress, and CPI(M) members, who were demanding reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs in education.
During the question hour, members from the opposition parties gathered in the Well of the House, demanding caste-based reservations and a caste census. Their protests, which included shouting slogans, led to multiple adjournments during the question and zero hours.
As tensions escalated, Speaker Surama Padhy intervened by calling for an all-party meeting to address the situation. Although the opposition resumed participation in the proceedings, Congress insisted on a statement from the Chief Minister regarding the reservation issue.
Following the question hour, BJD and Congress MLAs intensified their protests, demanding a caste census. The situation became chaotic, with legislators storming the Well of the House. Speaker Padhy was forced to adjourn the session twice, finally scheduling an all-party meeting to restore order.
