Odisha prepares for heavy rains as low-pressure system intensifies

Bhubaneswar, July 19: The well-marked low-pressure area over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal now lies over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts. It is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours and move northwestwards, crossing the Odisha coast within the following 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday.
The latest IMD forecast predicts squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, and along and off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal for the next 48 hours.
In light of the formation of this low-pressure area, the weather office has advised fishermen not to venture into these regions for the next two days. Most parts of Odisha are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days due to the influence of the low pressure, the IMD warns.
For July 19 and 20, the IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Boudh, and Puri.
Meanwhile, the state government has alerted the Collectors of these six districts to prepare for any potential emergencies arising from the heavy rainfall influenced by the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
