Poisonous gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant puts nine in hospital

Bhubaneswar, July 1: On Monday, a poisonous gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant resulted in nine employees being injured, eight of them critically. Reports indicate that the workers suffered from asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide (CO) exposure at the plant’s No. 5 blast furnace.
They were promptly taken to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) and moved to the ICU due to their critical condition.
This incident is not an isolated case at the Rourkela Steel Plant. There have been several gas leaks in the past, causing injuries and fatalities among workers. Despite these occurrences, it is alleged that the plant authorities have not implemented adequate safety measures.
A notable incident on January 6, 2021, saw a toxic gas leak at the same plant in Odisha, resulting in the deaths of four workers and injuries to seven others.
