Odisha orders midday work ban to combat heatwave threat

Bhubaneswar, May 31: On Friday, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu issued a notification prohibiting the employment of laborers for outdoor work between 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM due to soaring temperatures and a prevailing heatwave.
Notably, 41 people succumbed to the heatwave in western Odisha in a single day on Thursday, raising significant concerns.
The notification stated, "Life has been thrown out of gear across Odisha due to the severe heatwave. In such a situation, the risk of death and various health ailments has increased in the state. However, the state government is ready to deal with the situation."
The order has been issued to protect workers. All Revenue Commissioners and District Collectors have been directed to take appropriate preventive measures and make special arrangements for workers engaged in essential services.
Meanwhile, the Public Health Director informed the media that six beds in each Community Health Center (CHC) and one in each Primary Health Center (PHC) in every district have been reserved for sunstroke treatment. Hospital authorities have been directed to arrange adequate drinking water supplies and ORS for those affected by the heatwave.
The SRC has communicated detailed instructions to all District Collectors and Departments to ensure preparedness and preventive measures during the heatwave season.
